The infant, a girl, survived thanks to the quick actions of a passerby.

According to Łódź police spokesperson Maksymilian Jasiak, an individual alerted officers at around 8:20 p.m. on Tuesday after stumbling upon the newborn in a deserted building on Zgierska Street.

“When our patrol arrived, they confirmed that a living newborn was wrapped in a plastic bag. Paramedics stabilized the baby’s condition and transported her to the hospital,” Jasiak told the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

The infant, who doctors say was severely hypothermic with a body temperature of only 27 degrees Celsius, is receiving medical care in the neonatal ward of the Central Clinical Hospital in Łódź.

Prosecutors and police have opened an investigation under the supervision of the Łódź-Bałuty District Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities have already questioned witnesses and secured surveillance footage from the neighborhood.

Paweł Jasiak, press officer for the Łódź District Prosecutor’s Office, said the case is being treated as attempted murder with possible intent.

“According to initial medical assessments, the baby was placed in a plastic bag alongside the placenta, suggesting the birth likely occurred just an hour or two before she was abandoned,” he explained.

“We are asking anyone with information that could help identify the child’s mother to come forward.”
