The long weekend saw many Poles travel to popular tourist destinations, encouraged by warm weather and a public holiday on Thursday.

Police said they stopped more than 1,628 drunk drivers during the five-day period.

Robert Opas from the General Police Headquarters (KGP) told reporters on Monday that the number of road accidents was down by 42 compared with the same period last year, with fatalities falling by 15.

The number of injured also declined, by six, and police stopped 34 fewer drunk drivers, Opas said.

He added that more than 4,100 officers were deployed on roads each day during the break to help improve safety.
