The woman, identified as a university employee, died at the scene; a member of the university’s security staff who tried to help her was hospitalised with severe injuries, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
The suspect, a 22-year-old Polish man, was detained by police, it said.
Police and prosecutors were investigating the scene on Wednesday night.
Community in mourning
The university declared Thursday a day of mourning.
"The University of Warsaw community has been struck by a huge tragedy," its rector said in a statement.
"Our colleague, a university employee, was brutally murdered," the statement added. "A member of the university guard was also seriously injured. The perpetrator has been apprehended.”
Mayor sends sympathies
Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski expressed condolences in an X post.
"I was shocked to hear of the horrific crime on the University of Warsaw campus," he wrote. "I offer my deepest sympathy to the family and loved ones of the murdered woman. I also hope for the full recovery of the man who was injured while trying to provide assistance."
"This brutal attack must be met with severe punishment," Trzaskowski also said.
