European Parliament launches European Order of Merit

The European Parliament has launched the European Order of Merit, the first honour of its kind to be awarded by an EU institution.

The order was established earlier this month to mark the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, a milestone in the founding of European unity.

The new civilian distinction will honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to European integration and the promotion of European values, according to the European Parliament.

The European Order of Merit is intended to reaffirm a shared European identity at a time when global challenges demand stronger unity, it said.

"Europe is built by its people and the European Order of Merit is for them," said European Parliament President Roberta Metsola.

"This Order celebrates those who lead with courage, act with conviction, and believe — like Robert Schuman — that peace, democracy and dignity are not just ideals, but actions," she added.
