Poland's state-owned postal service, Poczta Polska, says it has opened an urban apiary at its parcel-sorting center in the eastern city of Lublin and launched a nationwide service for the safe transport of live honey bees.

The apiary, built in partnership with environmental NGO Odzyskaj Środowisko, features hives made from the stainless-steel drums of discarded washing machines.

Designed by graphic artist and beekeeper Tomasz Waśkiewicz, each hive houses 40,000 to 90,000 docile Carniolan bees. Concept work took more than a year, the company said on Tuesday.

Recycled e-waste was also used for waterers, planters and educational panels installed around the site, dubbed “From Washing Machine to Hive," state news agency PAP reported.

Poczta Polska last month added live-bee shipments to its Pocztex courier portfolio, targeting the country's roughly 100,000 beekeepers.

The announcement coincides with the UN-designated World Bee Day celebration on Tuesday, which highlights the insects’ role in pollinating about 70 percent of global food crops.
