This year’s theme is "Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all."
In Poland, bees are celebrated twice a year: on May 20, when the country joins the global observance of World Bee Day, established by the United Nations in 2018, and again on August 8, which marks the national Great Bee Day.
The decline in bee populations threatens food production, drives up costs and worsens food insecurity, especially in rural communities.
Bees are responsible for pollinating around three-quarters of the crops we consume. Simple actions, such as planting bee-friendly flowers, reducing lawn mowing or building bee hotels, can go a long way in supporting bees and other crucial pollinators.
There are about 20,000 bee species worldwide, with around 470 found in Poland—most of them wild bees, which are the primary agents of pollination.
Agnieszka Bielawska has the story.
