The event marked the presentation of Stories of Surrender, a documentary interweaving Bono’s personal reflections, U2’s music, and footage from his solo performances at New York’s Beacon Theatre.
The Ukrainian servicemembers, who later performed music at the film’s afterparty, included wounded veterans and active soldiers with artistic backgrounds - among them a sniper who plays the bandura and an opera singer who lost a leg to a landmine.
Their participation was coordinated by Cultural Landing, a Ukrainian cultural initiative led by musician and soldier Kola Serha, who shared details of the event on Instagram.
Sean Penn, who has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, helped bring the soldiers to Cannes.
“They are our friends from the trenches,” Bono said. “We owe you access to freedom. Slava Ukraini!” The hall erupted in a 7-minute standing ovation, as reported by Meanwhile in Ukraine.
