Sebastian M., the suspect in a deadly 2023 car crash on Poland’s A1 motorway, was formally brought before prosecutors in Katowice on Tuesday following his extradition from the United Arab Emirates.
The accident, which occurred in September near Piotrków Trybunalski in central Poland, killed a couple and their five-year-old son when their Kia vehicle burst into flames after being struck by a BMW allegedly driven by M. at extremely high speed.
Polish authorities had issued an Interpol red notice after M. fled to the UAE. He was arrested in Dubai following what police described as close cooperation between Polish officials and Emirati authorities, including the UAE’s Ministry of Interior and the Dubai police.
On Monday evening, M. arrived in Warsaw under police escort on a commercial flight and was immediately transported to a detention center in the Silesian region of southern Poland. He was brought to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Katowice on Tuesday to be formally charged and questioned.
At a joint press conference, Poland’s Justice Minister Adam Bodnar and Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak thanked law enforcement, prosecutors, diplomats, and other agencies involved in securing the extradition.
The lawyer representing the victims’ family, Łukasz Kowalski, echoed the gratitude, acknowledging the role of Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, witnesses who came forward with evidence, and the media, whose coverage helped keep public pressure on authorities.
The Polish police expressed appreciation to their Emirati counterparts in a social media post, praising their “professionalism, dedication, and exemplary cooperation.”
