According to Karol Kierzkowski of the State Fire Service, Polish firefighters responded to 1,578 weather-related emergencies on Thursday alone, with an additional 332 incidents overnight.

Most cases involved flooding, fallen trees and storm-damaged buildings, as emergency crews continue to deal with the aftermath amid ongoing weather alerts.

Severe weather hits crops

Due to an error by Poland’s Government Security Centre (RCB), residents of the southern Małopolska region did not receive emergency storm warnings despite severe weather that damaged over 70 rooftops and prompted more than 600 fire service interventions, officials said.

The agency has launched an internal investigation to determine whether the failure was caused by human or technical error, public broadcaster Polskie Radio 24 reported.

Farmers in the southwest also suffered significant losses, with private radio broadcaster RMF FM reporting that a sudden downpour on Wednesday damaged strawberry fields and crops including onions and cabbage.

Storm batters central Poland, dozens of buildings damaged

According to Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza, the hardest-hit area in the central Mazovia region during the recent storm was Płock County, particularly the municipality of Drobin.

There, strong winds completely tore the roofs off 10 buildings and partially damaged 29 others, while power lines were also affected.

Emergency services remained on standby and were responding to calls.

Firefighters were primarily involved in removing fallen trees and broken branches, as well as pumping water from flooded buildings and roads.

In the central city of Płock, a falling tree branch injured a man, who remains hospitalized.

Mazovia province governor Mariusz Frankowski has urged residents to pay close attention to weather alerts, as storm warnings remain in effect through Friday.
