The case has sparked national outrage and prompted urgent reforms to child protection laws across the country.
Kamil spent 35 days in hospital before his death, following prolonged and brutal mistreatment allegedly inflicted by his stepfather, mother, and other relatives.
The stepfather faces charges of murder with particular cruelty, while the boy’s mother is accused of aiding and abetting the killing. Additionally, Kamil’s aunt and uncle are charged with failing to provide help when he was in immediate danger.
The trial is taking place at the District Court in Częstochowa, southern Poland, and is closed to the public. Only the indictment was made public on Monday.
