A newborn female southern pudu at Warsaw Zoo has been named “Rosa” after an online poll in which nearly 2,000 people voted, the zoo said on Tuesday.
The poll’s winner was suggested by one participant, who wrote that “Rosa” evokes “morning dew that can be seen only at dawn and then disappears.”
Keepers added that the name also refers to the rose flower.
Rosa is “growing well under the watchful eye of her mother, Juana, and her keepers,” the zoo said.
For now, she remains in a specially enclosed area that shields her from birds, but visitors should soon be able to spot her in the outdoor paddock.
Last year, the zoo welcomed another female southern pudu, which was named Pralinka (Praline).
The southern pudu (Pudu puda) is native to South America and, slightly larger than its northern cousin, is the world’s second‑smallest deer. Its population is shrinking because of habitat loss, and the species is classified as Near Threatened.
