Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Sejm (the lower house of parliament), expressed support for the move during a press conference on Tuesday, saying the appointment could strengthen Poland’s foreign policy.
“There are various ways to reinforce a minister’s position within the government. One of them is the title of deputy prime minister,” said Jakub Stefaniak, deputy head of the Prime Minister’s Office, speaking earlier on Polish Radio.
His remarks follow media reports - first published by broadcaster TVN24 - suggesting that Radosław Sikorski could receive the new role as part of a broader reshuffle set to be announced on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk is expected to discuss the planned changes with his cabinet on Tuesday. Coalition leaders reportedly reached a final agreement on the details on Monday evening.
The new government line-up is scheduled to be officially announced at around 10:00 AM local time on Wednesday, 23 July, with the swearing-in ceremony for new ministers likely to follow on Thursday.
