From snake bites to toxic plants: Toxicologist warns of summer hazards in Poland
Dr Matuszkiewicz, a toxicologist at Franciszek Raszeja City Hospital in Poznań, has advised via social media that while summer is a time to relax, it also brings risks due to careless behavior.
Many people are unaware that common medications for pain, allergies, or infections, when combined with alcohol, can cause poisoning, liver damage, or dangerous effects on the nervous system.
Additionally, summer in Poland is the season for bites from the venomous European adder (Vipera berus) and skin burns caused by Sosnowski’s hogweed - a highly toxic plant whose contact can lead to severe injuries requiring treatment in a toxicology ward.
