Poland’s Ministry of Culture and National Heritage has announced that the Książ Castle and Palace complex in Wałbrzych, southwestern Poland, has been added to the list of Historic Monuments, which now includes 133 sites.

Książ Castle is famed for its mix of medieval fortifications, baroque splendour and neo-Renaissance elegance. Built in the late 13th century by Duke Bolko I, it later became the residence of the aristocratic Hochberg family, whose most celebrated member was the glamorous Princess Daisy.

The castle’s opulent interiors once hosted European elites, including Kaiser Wilhelm II, and its owners were known for their charitable work in the local community. But during World War Two, the Nazis seized the estate, destroying much of its original décor and carving out a network of underground tunnels — a source of enduring mystery and speculation, including links to the legend of a “golden train” of Nazi treasure.

After the war, the Red Army stripped the site of its remaining valuables. Decades of neglect followed, until extensive restoration returned Książ to its former glory. Today, visitors can explore its grand halls, terraces, gardens, stables and palm house, while local legends - from the White Lady ghost to tales of hidden treasure - continue to captivate the imagination.
