Poland could see more autumn heatwaves, climatologist says

Poland may approach past autumn temperature records, with more warm spells likely after astronomical autumn begins, a climatologist told Polish Press Agency (PAP).

Prof. Bogdan Chojnicki of the Poznań University of Life Sciences said recent weather patterns show a clear tendency toward warmth.

“September, which we are experiencing now, resembles September a year ago,” he noted, adding that temperatures remain well above normal despite expectations of cooling.

He argued that this is probably not the last warm surge of the season. According to Chojnicki, current conditions are driven by warm air masses arriving from the south, “from over Africa.”

While the “last warm wave” is usually associated with September, he said it can also occur in October and “often even in December and January.”

Long-range forecasts prepared by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) indicate that over the next five weeks the average temperature in Poland will range—depending on the scenario and region—from 4°C to 17°C.

The northwest is expected to be warmest, with the lowest values in the southeast. Projections for the next four months point to air temperatures at or above the 1991–2020 long-term norms.

“To have a golden Polish autumn, the weather need not be hot, but warm and calm,” Chojnicki said.
