Moments before the traditional Gaudeamus Igitur - a centuries-old Latin student anthem marking the start of the academic year - was sung, the ceremonial professors’ procession at the university was interrupted by tensions linked to the Gaza conflict.
Protesters displayed banners reading “Israel has destroyed every university in Gaza” and “We, the students, are ashamed of Jagiellonian University.”
Founded in 1364, the institution is not only the oldest university in Poland but also one of the oldest academic centers in the world.

New academic year brings new rules for students in Poland
The start of the academic year introduces several significant changes for students. These include digital student IDs (mLegitymacje) and simplified reporting requirements for university investments above 100,000 PLN (€23,475).
Universities are still adjusting to new rules for admitting international students, introduced over the summer. Foreign applicants must hold a high school diploma and demonstrate B2-level proficiency in the language of instruction.
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has announced further reforms planned for 2026. These include more flexible management of rector scholarship funds and the use of public funds to support students with disabilities in postgraduate programs.
In the coming months, the academic community is also awaiting new research evaluation rules and a revision of the Higher Education and Science Act.
