The suspect was transferred to Polish police at a border crossing on Tuesday and placed in custody in the north-western city of Szczecin.

Formal charges are expected next week in Lublin, eastern Poland, over his alleged role in a major organised crime network involved in the production and trafficking of narcotics across Europe.

Arrested in Hamburg in September while reportedly attempting to fly to the United Arab Emirates, Patryk M. had been sought under a European Arrest Warrant.

A German court rejected both his appeal and his request for asylum, clearing the way for his deportation.

The case has attracted political attention after photos emerged last year showing "Big Bu" with Poland’s current president, Karol Nawrocki, then head of the state-run Institute of National Remembrance.

The images caused controversy during Nawrocki’s presidential campaign. The president has said the photos were taken years after the two met through amateur boxing and denied any personal or criminal connection.
