Prosecutors say the case concerns a social care home in Wschowa, a small town in western Poland, close to the German border.

According to the District Prosecutor’s Office in Zielona Góra, the nun faces charges of physically and psychologically abusing underage residents who were described as vulnerable due to intellectual disabilities.

Two other women, who are not members of a religious order, have been charged with coercing a resident into specific actions.

Prosecutors said the allegations relate to the mistreatment of minors and individuals deemed helpless because of age or mental impairment.

The nun has already given testimony during questioning by investigators, a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office confirmed.

The care home is run by a religious order, though authorities have not disclosed when the alleged offences took place.

Under Polish criminal law, abuse of a helpless person carries a potential prison sentence of up to eight years, while coercion is punishable by up to three years in jail. The investigation is ongoing.
