According to the Financial Times (FT), Donald Trump Jr. spent two days hunting in Mongolia in late August with Umar Kremlev, a Russian businessman and head of the International Boxing Association (IBA), who had previously paid part of the costs of his wedding.

ProPublica reported in September that Kremlev paid for part of Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas, including the rental of an island and a fireworks display. The couple described the payment as a gift from a dear friend.

Donald Trump said his son had repaid Kremlev.

Kremlev has headed the Gazprom-sponsored IBA since 2020 and previously led the Russian Boxing Federation.

He has been associated with the pro-Kremlin Night Wolves motorcycle club and, according to the Russian investigative outlet Proekt, has links to Russian security structures.

He also took part in Putin’s delegation to China in May 2026.

Kremlev is linked to the Healthy Fatherland organisation, which Ukrainian authorities accuse of involvement in the transfer of Ukrainian children from occupied territories and their indoctrination.

A guide said Trump Jr. killed an Altai argali, an endangered wild sheep prized for its large horns. Republican donor Kevin Small also joined the trip after winning the opportunity at a charity auction.

The meeting between Trump Jr. and Kremlev was corroborated using witness accounts, flight data and public records.

Trump Jr. travelled with Secret Service agents. According to the FT, the US embassy in Ulaanbaatar paid their accommodation costs during the visit.

After the hunt, Trump Jr. met Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khürelsükh. His spokesman said the meeting was informal and did not concern political issues.

Trump Jr.’s spokesman described his relationship with Kremlev as a private friendship based on their shared interest in hunting and fishing.

Former counterintelligence official Holden Triplett warned that Russian intelligence services could exploit such contacts regardless of the intentions of those involved.
