Although e-prescriptions could be used in any Polish pharmacy from January 1, 2019, from this week the electronic version is required as standard, with paper prescriptions allowed in exceptional circumstances.
The health ministry said that doctors who are not connected to the e-prescription system yet will not be penalised in January.
However, under the rules, financial penalties are to come into force in July.
Over 63 million e-prescriptions were issued in Poland between the end of May 2018 and January. This year, the ministry and pharmacists are expecting 750 million.
Health Minister Łukasz Szumowski said on Wednesday: “Thousands of e-prescriptions are issued in Poland every minute.”
He added: “This is the largest digital service in Poland dedicated to citizens.”
According to the health ministry, there are already 81,000 doctors in Poland issuing e-prescriptions.
