People who were active opponents of the regime from 1956 to 1989, when communism in Poland collapsed, will be entitled to receive at least PLN 2,400 (USD 639, EUR 544) a month in pension or disability allowances.

If they receive less than that at present they will be able to claim a top-up.

Under the new law, former oppositionists will also be entitled to cut-price public transport and railway tickets.

The Prime Minister’s Office said that Poles who opposed the communist authorities were subjected to various forms of punishment, including measures which had a negative impact on their financial situation.

Plans for the new benefit were submitted to parliament by the Polish government last month.

The law enters into force in 30 days.
