Stork nest cleanup under way in Poland

A major cleanup effort has begun in Poland to give a fresh look to hundreds of storks' nests before the birds return to the country in the spring.

The white stork is said to be Poland's favourite bird and has long been considered one of the symbols of the country, especially as about a quarter of all storks living worldwide were born here, according to statistics.

Storks are migratory birds that leave Europe for warmer climes in the autumn, and then return in the spring.

So now is the perfect time for a good clean of the nests to make sure they are safe for both the birds themselves and humans, experts say.
