21 dead, 408 hurt on Polish roads over Corpus Christi long weekend: police

Twenty-one people were killed and 408 injured in 340 road accidents across Poland during the Corpus Christi long weekend, police said on Monday.

With Thursday, June 19, observed as a public holiday for the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi, many Poles took Friday off to enjoy an extended break from work.

Road traffic surged as families travelled to popular tourist destinations, encouraged by warm weather.

Police said they stopped 1,715 drunk drivers between Wednesday, June 18, and Sunday, June 22.

During the first five months of this year, 586 people died and 8,723 were injured in 7,425 road accidents in Poland, according to police data.
