The French first couple uncovered conclusive evidence linking the US podcaster harassing them to far-right figures in France, the UK and the US, as well as to Russian media, according to a report by the Financial Times.

According to the Financial Times, the Macrons hired a prominent US investigative firm to examine Candace Owens before filing a 219-page complaint in July in Delaware Superior Court.

The lawsuit accuses Owens of promoting false and transphobic claims about Brigitte Macron through an eight-part YouTube series and social media posts. The allegations include claims that the French first lady is transgender, assumed her brother’s identity, and that President Emmanuel Macron is the product of a CIA mind-control experiment. The lawsuit also asserts that Owens suggested the couple are blood relatives.

Far-right circles behind Macron harassment

Investigators traced the conspiracy theory targeting Brigitte Macron back to a Spanish blog in 2017, noting its spread in France by 2021 and further promotion in 2023 by far-right activist Xavier Poussard.

Owens first referenced the claims on her show in March 2024 and later interviewed Poussard directly. Russian media amplified her series, and the investigation highlighted her participation in a 2019 nationalist conference in Paris with politician Marion Maréchal, as well as her online interactions with Russian nationalist Alexander Dugin.

The case is part of a wider pattern of online harassment known as “transvestigation,” in which public figures are falsely accused of being transgender. Owens has dismissed the legal action, while some of her far-right allies have expressed doubts about her chances in court. Macron’s lawyer, Thomas Clare, told the Financial Times that the couple is prepared to testify in Delaware, though no trial date has yet been set.
