According to police figures released on Monday, 360 road accidents were recorded between 15 and 18 August, up from 288 in 2024.
A total of 41 people lost their lives – 17 more than last year – while 431 were injured (compared to 345 a year earlier). Officers also detained 1,450 drivers under the influence of alcohol, slightly more than the 1,431 recorded in 2024.
The holiday period was dangerous not only on the roads but also on the water. In Lublin, eastern Poland, emergency services were called to Lake Zemborzycki after a 39-year-old intoxicated woman, wearing an evening gown, nearly drowned while attempting to cool off in the summer heat. She was fined for her actions.
Several accidents involving teenagers on electric scooters were also reported.
Meanwhile, the Government Security Centre confirmed that 16 people drowned across the country over the long weekend.
Authorities have once again urged people not to enter the water under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to swim only at supervised bathing sites, and to follow lifeguards’ instructions.
