On Friday evening, courts across Poland will welcome visitors for the Open Courts Night, offering guided tours, mock trials and educational workshops.

A map of participating courts is available at the Ministry of Justice website.

On Saturday, the main celebrations take place at the Ministry of Justice courtyard on Aleje Ujazdowskie in Warsaw, running from 1pm to 6pm local time.

Visitors can meet judges, prosecutors, lawyers, prison officers, mediators and court experts, as well as take part in quizzes, games and competitions.

Activities include a rollover simulator, special goggles simulating the effects of alcohol and drugs, and a prison service dog demonstration.

This year's theme is Law for Safety.

The day's symbol is a purple ribbon, worn by judges and legal professionals and displayed on court buildings.

The events are organised by the Ministry of Justice and the Polish Judges' Association Iustitia.

The observance was established by MEDEL – the European Association of Judges and Prosecutors for Democracy and Freedoms – which marks 23 May as the Alert Day for the Independence of Justice.

It is marked to commemorate the death of Italian judge Giovanni Falcone, who was killed in a Sicilian Mafia attack on that date in 1992.
