Warsaw marks 82nd anniversary of the Wola massacre

Eighty-two years ago, one of the deadliest chapters of the Second World War unfolded in a Warsaw district few outside Poland know by name.

Commemorations mark the 82nd anniversary of the Wola Massacre. Pillars inscribed with the names of the victims stand at the entrance to the Warsaw Insurgents' Cemetery.

German forces killed tens of thousands of civilians in the district of Wola in the first days of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising — and historians say the massacre remains little known internationally to this day.

Commemorations took place on Wednesday at the Warsaw Insurgents' Cemetery, where mourners lit candles and laid flowers for the victims.
