The survey, published in late July, found that 73 percent of respondents drink alcohol, a drop from previous years, suggesting growing awareness in Poland of the health risks associated with drinking.
Health concerns were the most commonly cited reason for giving up alcohol, mentioned by 57 percent of abstainers.
Another 51 percent said they simply had no need to drink. This reason was particularly common among respondents aged 18 to 24, with 79 percent of non-drinkers in that age group citing it.
Six in 10 respondents, or 60 percent, said they believe alcohol is harmful to health even when consumed in small amounts. Seven percent disagreed, while 27 percent said alcohol has no significant impact on health.
Eighty-eight percent of those surveyed agreed that it is possible to organize a successful party without alcohol. The figure rose to 97 percent among respondents aged 18 to 24.
Wine was the most popular alcoholic drink among respondents, with 32 percent saying they drank it, up 7 percentage points from 2019. Beer was consumed by 30 percent and vodka by 13 percent.
Men reported drinking more frequently than women. Nearly one-third of male alcohol consumers who are not abstainers said they drink at least once a week, compared with 7 percent of women who drink alcohol "at least occasionally."
Among female drinkers, a noticeably larger proportion said they drink only several times a year.
"People who drink alcohol more often than average include those with higher education, managers and professionals, as well as manual workers and respondents with the highest household incomes," CBOS said.
The survey was conducted from April 9 to 19 among a representative sample of 944 adults.
