Poland’s President Karol Nawrocki has called on the government to increase funding for science and higher education, saying Poland should aim to raise spending on science to 3 percent of GDP.

He said he would support “all reasonable initiatives” aimed at increasing funding, noting that current spending is almost half the proposed level.

Nawrocki said increased funding was particularly necessary because the number of students is rising again and because of the challenges facing Poland.

He also recalled that he had signed amendments this year providing greater support for doctoral students, but said further measures were needed to strengthen Polish science and improve conditions for young researchers.

Addressing the academic community, Nawrocki wished researchers “research courage, constant deepening of knowledge and development of scientific talents.”

He said universities had historically been communities of teachers and students united by cooperation, sometimes competition and often friendship, with a shared understanding of the mission of seeking the truth.

Nawrocki also addressed the impact of artificial intelligence and other new technologies on science.

He said new technologies were creating opportunities to overcome barriers, solve complex mathematical problems and discover new diagnostic possibilities.

At the same time, he warned against giving up one’s independence, relying too readily on new tools and accepting their results without sufficient criticism, saying these temptations also affect people with academic titles.

He wished the academic community independence in making choices and for universities to remain spaces of freedom, while wishing students enthusiasm, inspiration and a strong desire for intellectual work and personal development.

He highlighted that the work of the entire academic community shapes the present and future of Polish science and, consequently, the country.
