Agnieszka Jędrzak, a minister at the Presidential Chancellery, says the delays in awarding the medals are due to the large number of applications.
Couples who married between 1975 and 1979 belonged to the post-war baby boom generation. In 1975 alone, 330,800 marriages were recorded, with similar numbers in subsequent years.
Jędrzak says the backlog did not begin during Nawrocki’s presidency but dates back to the COVID-19 pandemic, when rotating office work slowed the processing of applications.
The chancellery’s State Decorations System does not allow large numbers of applications to be processed in batches, according to Jędrzak.
She says delays also occurred under previous administrations, but were not used for political attacks on the president and his chancellery.
