The 11-strong team is due to leave for Nepal at the end of this month.

The expedition is part of large-scale preparations for next year’s winter expedition to K2, the world’s second-highest peak (8,611 metres) and the only one still unconquered in winter.

A previous Polish expedition to K2 in March failed to reach the summit.

The Lhotse expedition is led by 45-year-old Marcin Kaczkan, one of Poland’s top climbers, but most of the team’s members are young climbers with little experience in the highest Himalayan routes.

The expedition is being organised by the Polish Mountaineering Association in partnership with Hasco-Lek, a pharmaceutical company based in the southwestern Polish city of Wrocław.

Members of the team have undergone a series of medical tests in a Wrocław hospital run by the company.
