The average Polish household spent PLN 458 (EUR 105, USD 116) on sports last year, which is PLN 40 more than in 2014, the Polish Economic Institute said.

The largest increase in expenditure concerned the purchase of sportswear, according to the report.

Overall, Poles shell out EUR 1.77 billion on sport annually, slightly below the EU average of EUR 1.83 billion. That places Poland eighth in an EU ranking, ahead of Belgium, Finland and Denmark, but behind France, Germany and Italy.

Meanwhile, 56 percent of Poles do not engage in any physical activity, down by 10 percentage points from 2004.

The price of inactivity is high -- in Poland it is estimated at PLN 7 billion annually in healthcare costs, the institute said.

The Polish sports market is estimated to be worth PLN 9.63 billion, according to the report.
