Tennis: Poland’s Hurkacz climbs to world No. 35 as US Open starts

Polish tennis player Hubert Hurkacz has climbed six notches to a career-high world No. 35 in the latest ATP rankings.

The 22-year-old Pole on Saturday won his first ATP tournament in Winston-Salem in the US state of North Carolina.

Meanwhile, Kamil Majchrzak, a Polish 23-year-old, has retained his No. 94 spot in the latest rankings by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP).

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic remains No. 1 in the ATP ranking, followed by Spain’s Rafael Nadal and Switzerland's Roger Federer.

The new rankings were released as main-draw play was set to kick off at the US Open Grand Slam tournament in New York on Monday.

Meanwhile, Poland's Magda Linette has advanced from No. 80 to a career-best No. 53 in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) ranking.

Eighteen-year-old Iga Świątek is the highest-ranked Polish female tennis player, at No. 49.
