Belgian Vital Heynen has had his contract as coach of the Poland men's volleyball team extended by a year.

The move means Heynen will manage the national squad during the Tokyo Olympic Games and the European championships next year, the Polish Volleyball Federation said on its website.

Heynen's previous contract had been due to run until the end of September.

The postponement of the 2020 Olympic Games to next year amid the global coronavirus pandemic “made it necessary to extend the contract,” the volleyball federation added.

Heynen took over as Poland coach in February 2018. Under his wing, the Poles defended their world championship title later that year, and then qualified for the Tokyo Olympics.
