Football: Poland beat Andorra 3-0 in second 2022 World Cup qualifier

Poland’s national football team beat Andorra 3-0 at home on Sunday in its second 2022 World Cup qualifier.

Captain Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring for Poland with a clinical volley in the 30th minute at the Polish Army Stadium in Warsaw.

He followed up with a second strike 10 minutes into the second half before substitute forward Karol Świderski set the final score at 3-0 for the home team in the 88th minute.

The match was played without spectators amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Poland are ranked 19th worldwide by football's governing body FIFA, while Andorra are No. 151 in the FIFA table.

The Polish team will now take on England in its next World Cup qualifying fixture away in London on Wednesday.

Poland opened their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 3-3 away draw with Hungary in Budapest on March 25.

Poland’s qualifying Group I also includes Albania and San Marino. 

The qualification stage for the 2022 World Cup will run from March to November 2021, while the tournament will be held in Qatar from November 21 to December 18, 2022.

Poland failed to advance to the knockout phase of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, after losing 1-2 to Senegal and 0-3 to Colombia in the group stage. The Poles won their final game, beating Japan 1-0, but finished bottom of their Group H.

Poland finished third in the 1974 World Cup in West Germany and were also third in Spain in 1982.
