Climbing: Poland's Mirosław smashes women's world speed record in Tokyo

Poland's Aleksandra Mirosław broke the women's world record for speed climbing by 0.12 seconds at the Tokyo Olympics on Friday.

The 27-year-old Pole reached the top of a 15-metre wall in 6.84 seconds to win the first leg of the three-event Olympic final.

The previous world record of 6.96 seconds was set last year by Russian climber Iuliia Kaplina, who did not make the Olympic final in Tokyo.

In addition to a head-to-head race up the wall, the Olympic climbing competition consists of bouldering, which requires climbers to scale obstacles set along a low wall, and a timed climb that tests endurance.

The combined score determines the overall winner.
