"Thank you for your trust; this is the most important event in my life," Kulesza said to his supporters after the vote in the Polish capital.

"I would like to encourage everyone to work together so that we can develop. I promise to work hard and am asking you for your support because we are connected by football," he added in a short speech during a convention of the Polish Football Association, which is the national governing body for the sport in Poland.

Boniek, the outgoing president of the Polish FA, is stepping down after two terms. He was first elected to the post on October 26, 2012 and was re-elected in 2016.

His second term was originally due to end last year, but it was extended until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Boniek, a former top Poland player, was earlier this year elected as a vice president of European football’s governing body UEFA, according to an announcement in April.
