The Catalan side didn’t manage to tip the balance in their favour in their first league game of the new season at Camp Nou last Saturday.

The match against underdogs Rayo Vallecano ended in a goalless tie, and Lewandowski failed to convert the few chances he had late in the game.

Three new players, including the Poland national football team captain, made their debuts in the top-tier La Liga opening fixture for Barcelona on August 13.

The tie came as a huge letdown to fans as the Barcelona board had brought in strong reinforcements to the team.

Alongside Lewandowski, the club contracted four other world-class players.

Their first league appearance at Camp Nou was in question until hours before the game due to paperwork inconsistencies.

Barcelona have long been embroiled in controversy over their excessive spending. In the summer transfer window, the Catalan club splashed out over EUR 150 million in an effort to "escape mediocrity," according to reports.

Just a month ago, multiple media outlets reported the club was swimming in red ink, burdened with a EUR 1.3 million debt.

Following a string of "economic levers," or financial operations involving selling part of their future TV rights, Barcelona bounced back and could go on a shopping spree.

Rumour has it they are still whetting their appetite for at least two more incoming transfers.

Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and Bernardo Silva from Manchester City are believed to be Barcelona’s new targets.
