Tennis: Poland’s Świątek through to 3rd round in Cincinnati

Polish tennis star Iga Świątek has moved into the third round of the Western & Southern Open tournament in the US city of Cincinnati.

The Polish world No. 1 on Wednesday saw off American Sloane Stephens 6-4, 7-5 in the second round of the women’s singles.

The top-seeded Polish player will now face Madison Keys of the United States for a place in the quarterfinals.

The Western & Southern Open tournament in Cincinnati, Ohio, is for many top tennis players the final warm-up before the US Open.

Świątek in June won the French Open Grand Slam tournament in Paris for the second time.

The 21-year-old, coached by countryman Tomasz Wiktorowski, in early April took over as the new number one in women's tennis, becoming the first Pole to top the world rankings.
