The unveiling ceremony took place on Wednesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Emblazoned with Lewandowski's name, signature and footprint, the plaque is a mark of appreciation for the Barcelona striker’s services to Polish football.

Lewandowski, who has played 132 times for Poland, scoring 76 goals, told reporters: “I am proud to be featured in the Avenue of Stars, alongside such outstanding figures and next to such a magnificent stadium.”

He added: “Hopefully I will play some more matches and score some more goals, helping the Polish team to some more victories at the National Stadium.”

Accolades

Lewandowski’s accolades include 10 Bundesliga titles and a Champions League triumph, as well as FIFA and UEFA player of the year awards. He has also finished as the Bundesliga’s top scorer on seven occasions.

At Wednesday’s ceremony, two other players were also given plaques in Polish football’s Avenue of Stars.

The honour was granted to goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek, the 2005 Champions League winner with Liverpool, and right-back Łukasz Piszczek, Lewandowski’s former teammate at Borussia Dortmund.

Now retired, both Dudek and Piszczek were long-serving Poland internationals, with more than 120 appearances for the country between them.

The Avenue of Stars is located close to the statue of Poland’s legendary 1970s coach Kazimierz Górski and includes plaques for some illustrious players from the past, including Kazimierz Deyna, Jan Tomaszewski and Zbigniew Boniek, the PAP news agency reported.
