Tennis: Poland’s Świątek moves into Ostrava semifinals

Polish tennis star Iga Świątek has advanced to the semifinals of the Ostrava Open tournament in the Czech Republic, with a straight-set win over Caty McNally of the United States.

The Polish world No. 1 saw off the 20-year-old American 6-4, 6-4 in their quarterfinal clash on Friday.

The Polish player will now face either home favourite Tereza Martincová or Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova for a place in the championship match.

Świątek last month won the US Open, claiming her seventh title this year.

The 21-year-old, coached by countryman Tomasz Wiktorowski, in early April took over as the new number one in women's tennis, becoming the first Pole to top the world rankings.
