"There will be many interesting fights and lots of boxing action at the highest level," said the head of the Polish Boxing Association, Grzegorz Nowaczek.
He added that the Leszek Drogosz Memorial is the second-biggest boxing event in Poland, after the annual Feliks Stamm Memorial tournament.
The 10th Leszek Drogosz Memorial will run until Sunday and feature boxers from countries including Ireland, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Leszek Drogosz was a three-time European boxing champion in the light welterweight division. He represented Poland at the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952, Melbourne in 1956, and Rome in 1960, where he won a bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Feliks “Papa” Stamm was an iconic Polish boxing coach who is remembered as the founder of what is known as the "Polish school of boxing," based on technical excellence and versatility. With him as coach, Polish boxers achieved their country’s biggest successes at Olympic Games and European championships.
Stamm worked as coach of the Polish national boxing team from 1936 to 1968, guiding fighters including Kazimierz Paździor, Józef Grudzień, Marian Kasprzyk, Jerzy Kulej, Zbigniew Pietrzykowski and Jan Szczepański, in addition to Drogosz.
