Poland is hosting the global tournament together with Sweden.
Poland's coach Patryk Rombel said ahead of the opening game that Olympic champions France were "a very difficult opponent to beat" and "a very difficult match to start with" for his team.
He added: "France are a very strong side and it will be a very difficult start for us. But if we want to go far in the tournament, we have to play against the best teams in the competition, so we will always have to face tough opponents."
Rombel also said that the Polish team was aiming to reach the quarterfinals of this year's world championship "because a place in the top eight will give us an opportunity to play in a tournament to qualify for the 2024 Olympics" in Paris.
Defending champions Denmark will be looking to become the first team to win the world championship three times in a row, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The 2023 World Men’s Handball Championship will be played across nine venues in Poland and Sweden from January 11 to 29.
