Tennis: Poland’s Linette reaches Australian Open quarterfinals

Polish tennis player Magda Linette has advanced to the quarterfinals of the women’s singles competition at the Australian Open tournament in Melbourne, notching up her best Grand Slam result so far.

The 30-year-old, ranked world No. 45 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), saw off France's fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia 7-6, 6-4 in the fourth round on Monday to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

The victory marked a career milestone for the Polish player, who will now take on world No. 30 Karolina Plíšková of the Czech Republic for a place in the last four.

Linette is the last Pole still standing in the singles at the 2023 Australian Open.

Poland's world No. 1 Iga Świątek has crashed out of the tournament, after being eliminated by Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan in the fourth round of the women's singles at Melbourne Park on Sunday.

On the men's side, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz bowed out of the tournament after being bested by American Sebastian Korda in the fourth round.

The 2023 Australian Open runs until January 29.
