The Polish world No. 13 won the three-set match 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 in almost two-and-a-half hours to reach the last 16 of the clay-court tournament in the south of France, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

Hurkacz will now face the winner of a match pitting Argentinian Diego Schwartzman against Italian Jannik Sinner for a place in the quarterfinals.

The 26-year-old Pole, who is coached by American Craig Boynton, has six singles titles to his name.

Hurkacz won his first singles career title in the Winston-Salem tournament in the US state of North Carolina in August 2019. In January 2021, he claimed his second trophy at the Delray Beach Open in the United States, and then followed up with victories at the Miami Open in April 2021, the Moselle Open indoor hard-court tournament in the French city of Metz in September 2021, and the Halle Open grass-court event in Germany in June last year.

In February 2023, Hurkacz won his sixth title by beating home favourite Benjamin Bonzi in the final of the Marseille Open tournament in France.
