The 26-year-old Pole, ranked world No. 15 by the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), defeated French player Richard Gasquet 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 in their second-round match on Friday.

Hurkacz, who had a bye in the first round, will next face Croatia's Borna Ćorić at the clay-court tournament in the Spanish capital.

The Polish player reached the quarterfinals of last year's Madrid Open, where he was eliminated by Serbian ace Novak Djokovic.

Meanwhile, Poland's Iga Świątek has advanced to the third round of the women's singles at the 2023 Madrid Open, with a 6-3, 6-2 win on Friday over Austria's Julia Grabher.

The Polish world No. 1 will now play American Bernarda Pera for a place in the quarterfinals.

The 2023 Madrid Open runs until May 7.
