Tennis: Poland’s Świątek cruises into 3rd round of French Open

Poland's Iga Świątek has cruised into the third round of the French Open Grand Slam tennis tournament, with a straight-set win over American Claire Liu.

The Polish world No. 1, who is the defending champion in Paris, ousted the 102nd-ranked American player 6-4, 6-0 in the second round of the women’s singles on Thursday.

Świątek, who celebrated her 22nd birthday on Wednesday, will next face China's Wang Xinyu in the women’s singles competition in the French capital.

On the men's side, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz will face Peru's Juan Pablo Varillas for a place in the third round in Paris on Friday.

The 2023 French Open runs until June 11.

Świątek triumphed at Roland Garros last year and in 2020.
