370 Polish athletes to compete in European Games on home soil

A total of 370 Polish athletes, 188 men and 182 women, have been selected to compete in the 3rd European Games, a major multi-sport event that begins in the southern Polish city of Kraków later this week.

More than 7,000 athletes from 48 countries are expected to take part in the event, which will take place in Kraków and 12 other southern Polish cities from June 21 to July 2, officials have announced.

Poland will be represented by athletes competing in 29 sports, including 46 track-and-field contestants, 29 canoers and kayakers, and 24 fencers.

Poles will also be competing in archery, badminton, basketball, beach handball, beach soccer, boxing, breaking, climbing, judo, karate, kickboxing, mountain biking, modern pentathlon, rugby, shooting, summer ski jumping, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and triathlon, officials said.

The European Games will provide opportunities to win European championship medals and a pathway to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games in some of the sports.

Poland won 14 medals, three gold, one silver and 10 bronze, at the 2nd European Games, which were held in Minsk, Belarus in June 2019.

Team Poland scooped 20 medals, two gold, eight silver and 10 bronze, at the 1st European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan, in 2015.

The European Games are an international multi-sport event that refers to the Olympic tradition and is contested by athletes from across Europe.
