Polish gymnast Lidia Szczerbińska-Król dies aged 89

Polish Olympic medal-winning gymnast Lidia Szczerbińska-Król has died at the age of 89, her family has announced.

Szczerbińska-Król won a bronze medal for Poland in gymnastics at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, the Polish Olympic Committee (PKOl) said.

The Polish team of Szczerbińska, Dorota Horzonek, Natalia Kot, Helena Rakoczy, Barbara Ślizowska and Danuta Stachow tied for third place with the Soviet Union at the time.

Born on April 30, 1934 in Warsaw, Szczerbińska-Król graduated from the School of Physical Education in the coastal city of Gdańsk in 1954.

During the Melbourne Games, she met her future husband. She then emigrated to Australia, where she taught gymnastics.

She died surrounded by her family on February 17 just months short of her 90th birthdaypublic broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
