Paris 2024: Poland’s Linette into second round of Olympic tennis singles

Poland's Magda Linette has moved into the second round of the women's singles at the Olympic tennis tournament in Paris, with a straight-set win over Russian Mirra Andreeva.

The Polish world No. 41 defeated the 17-year-old Russian player 6-3 6-4 in the French capital on Sunday, thanks to a combination of solid and consistent performance on the court.

The 32-year-old Pole, who won the Prague Open clay-court event in the Czech Republic on Friday, will now face Jasmine Paolini of Italy for a place in the third round of the Olympic tennis tournament.

Meanwhile, Poland's 48th-ranked Magdalena Fręch bowed out of the women's singles competition in Paris after losing her first-round match against Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova 4-6, 6-7 on Sunday.

Poland's world No. 1 Iga Świątek beat Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu 6-2, 7-5 in the first round in Paris and is set to take on home hopeful Diane Parry in her next match at the Olympics on Monday.
